Startup directories: how to tell the 20 that matter from the 200

Startup directories have a reputation problem: everyone remembers submitting to forty of them and feeling nothing. The instinct is right about most directories and wrong about the category. A minority of directories carry real authority, real traffic and real citation weight in AI answers and the work is telling the two groups apart before spending an evening.

The four numbers that separate them

  1. Domain rating. Authority passed by a DR 75 directory is a different product from a DR 20 one. Below roughly 40, the link is decoration.
  2. Real traffic. A directory with actual monthly visitors sends actual visitors. Many directories are link farms with no readers and engines discount them accordingly.
  3. Link type. Dofollow or the authority math is moot. Read the attribute off a live listing, not the marketing page.
  4. Liveness. Directory lists rot fast: dead domains, parked pages, lookalike scams squatting on old names. Any list not verified recently includes some of each.

Sequencing the work

Why this compounds beyond SEO

Directories are among the sources AI assistants read when composing category answers. Coverage across them makes your product a machine-readable fact, part of the record models summarize. The mechanics of that are in LLM SEO.

We maintain the verified version of this exact list: 110 startup and AI directories, every URL opened and checked by hand, with DR, traffic, cost, link type and badge requirements on every row. Free, no email wall.
