Most reddit marketing fails because it treats reddit as a feed, posting and hoping. The durable strategy treats it as a search surface: find the threads that already rank in Google for your buyers' questions, add the most useful answer in them and let the thread's traffic work for you for years.
Why threads beat posts
A new post lives for a day, then the feed moves on. A thread that ranks for a buying question gets read every single day by people typing that question into Google and AI assistants quote those same threads when they answer. One good comment in a ranking thread outperforms twenty new posts nobody searched for.
Finding the threads worth commenting in
- Search Google, not reddit: site:reddit.com best [your category] and the question forms of it. What ranks on page one is your target list.
- Drop anything archived or locked. Reddit does not accept new comments on archived threads and a surprising share of ranking threads are past the six-month archive window.
- Drop threads the community already buried. A thread sitting at one upvote with a 55% ratio is a dead room.
Where the comment goes
Placement decides whether anyone sees it. In a busy thread, above roughly 25 comments, a new top-level comment sinks. Reply under the top comment instead, where every reader of the thread passes. The exception: when the current top comment is weak, a couple of upvotes or an obvious promo, a strong top-level answer can take the slot.
The comment itself
- Answer the actual question first, in specifics. Numbers, steps, tradeoffs.
- Mention your product once, in the middle, with a disclosure: I build [product], so take this with that in mind. Disclosed mentions survive. Hidden ones get removed and remembered.
- Skip the salesy closers. Phrases like hope this helps and feel free to ask read as template and draw reports.
- Read the subreddit rules before the first comment. Half the business subreddits publish exact self-promotion rules and following them is the whole game.
Ratio to hold: nine useful contributions for every one that mentions your product. Moderators check profiles and that ratio is what a real member's profile looks like.
